Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description/Blazon
A device of gold color metal and enamel 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height consisting of a vertical gold double-bitted key with its loop in base and its shank crossing a horizontal wavy blue bar all in front of a gold sun of sixteen rays.

Symbolism
The key symbolizes command and control, the double bit in this instance alluding to the unit's former supply and service mission and its present maintenance assignment. The sun, the source of energy, is also a measurement of time, and refers to accomplishment within the time scheduled or allotted. The key and sun together are symbolic of the means of successfully completing difficult tasks, the sun signifying technical knowledge and selection, and the key the mechanical skills essential to maintenance. The wavy blue bar refers to the Rhineland campaign, World War II, in which the unit participated as the 541st Quartermaster Battalion.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 541st Supply and Service Battalion. It was redesignated for the 541st Maintenance Battalion in 30 Aug 1973.
